However, when people learn a foreign language, they frequently learn the rules first and then learn to apply these rules, which is something that native speakers rarely do at the beginning levels. In secondary school, native speakers may be taught that some of the language they use is not the accepted standard. But apart from that, they rarely have the need to consider what the rules are. As a result, it is common to find that native speakers are perfectly capable of using a certain grammar point correctly but are totally unable to explain the reason why it is correct. In this paper, we are looking into such a point. Our research was in order to answer a very simple question raised by a student: when do we include or omit the word “that” in indirect speech? This is a question that most native speakers would be unable to answer to their student’s satisfaction, and indeed our research into grammar books also shows that many writers of grammar books are equally unable to explain satisfactorily. Many books simply say it is “optional” but rarely go into details of explaining why and when it is optional. So exactly why and when does “that” disappear? This paper has been written as an attempt to give more complete answers to solve the Case of the Disappearing “That”.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"実践女子大学"}]},"item_10002_source_id_11":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA12216647","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Fujikami, Ryuji "}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"2880","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Jones, Andrew"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"2881","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2016-05-31"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"FLC9-3.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"771.3 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"FLC9-3","url":"https://jissen.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/1283/files/FLC9-3.pdf"},"version_id":"92178aa2-54ca-41c2-a77d-2b7c0a35ee09"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"The Case of the Disappearing “That”","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"The Case of the Disappearing “That”","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"16","path":["174"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2014-09-08"},"publish_date":"2014-09-08","publish_status":"0","recid":"1283","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["The Case of the Disappearing “That”"],"weko_creator_id":"16","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-05-15T13:04:12.916293+00:00"}
