I reveal why the Katakana phonetic notation is useful to Japanese learners of English as a foreign language, and discuss some problems of such notation. I also find how Jitsuyou Eikaiwa no Hiketsu ＊（1927） transcribes English sounds in Katakana letters to approximate the native pronunciations of English. I analyze Katakana phonetic notation in Jitsuyou Eikaiwa no Hiketsu from the viewpoint of sentence stress and then note that Jitsuyou Eikaiwa no Hiketsu tries to transcribe a variety of changes in pronunciation such as weakening of the function words like “and” and “of,” assimilation, and reduction. However, it does not show any primarily stressed syllables at all.
