The year after, September 14, 1885 (Meiji 18), she was appointed the administrator, the professor and the secretary in the foundation of the Noble Women’s School, and in the following year, February 10th of 1886 (Meiji 19), she was appointed the supervisor and the professor of the Noble Women’s School. It must be said, it is quite interesting that Utako Shimoda, who started her career as an educator at Shimoda School, and developed private education into Toyo School, moved her educational stage to a public school then supervised by Imperial Household Ministry.\n  In the Noble Women’s School, what she worked on first was editing of the Textbook of Japanese (Copyright: Imperial Household). It is extremely figural in the point that it indicates her intention and attitude that she would use textbooks she edited herself for her lectures instead of the ones done by others, and it can be said that it is an important accomplishment that reveals the educational principle of Utako Shimada at the dawn of women’s education.\n  Here, among those ten volumes, we discuss mainly the Volume Six: The Sarashina Diary, the draft of which is archived in the Jissen Women’s School. The Imperial Treasure Book written by Teika Fujiwara that is considered to be the best version of The Sarashina Diary is known to have considerable mistakes in bookbinding. The misbinding has been clarified by the research on the Imperial Treasure Book by Nobutsuna Sasaki and Kosuke Tamai in 1924 (Taisho 13), and further in the following year, by Tamai’s Notion on Misbinding of The Sarashina Diary. The Sarashina Diary that provided difficulties to follow the contexts due to the misbinding finally became understandable work, and thereafter, studies of The Sarashina Diary rapidly progressed. The body\nof the Textbook of Japanese was written before the discovery and the indication of the misbinding, and using the misbound version. It also revised and added notes. Historically, it can be said that it is the notable accomplishment that studied The Sarashina Diary before the clarification of the misbiniding, and an extremely pioneering interpretative work. There have been many studies on this Diary, but it should be considered one of the most pioneering interpretations that put others almost in the positions of defectives. And as it is the work of a woman, it only enhances its value even more.\n  Also, the time when the Textbook of Japanese was published was the eve of spirited ‘literary dispitues’ that produced number of depictions of ‘history of literature’. Many editorial books in school textbook type that cited authors and their works were coming out, but it was not that The\nSarashina Diary was adopted by those books immediately, and Shimoda’s quickness of selection and indentity were outstanding. The head notes are not explanations of the people, or meanings of words, but instead, indications of errors and lacking of literal texts that reveals her intention to compose idealistic texts. Furthermore, she discussed the reason why she took up The Sarashina Diary in pioneering manner, by relating it to her relation with Mino’s (Gifu prefecture of present day)  wamura han (a feudal domain) of her hometown and her own experiences of coming to Tokyo.
