However, it is difficult even for skilled people to identify washi from its external characteristics, and it is thought that washi was judged by qualitative evaluation methods such as looking through it as a texture of the washi surface, identifying the paper's non-uniformity, and visually evaluating its surface irregularities, luster, color, and tactile feel. After the development of optical technology, quantitative evaluation methods based on measured values became possible by measuring fiber shape, cell wall thickness, lumen, cell wall-like patterns, parenchyma cells, fiber width, fiber length, presence of fiber knots, luster, and color tone, etc., and more accurate discrimination became possible. However, most of these objective evaluation methods involve physical or chemical destruction of the specimen, and not all of them are applicable to classical manuscripts, old brush cuttings, literary works, and works of art, which are used as specimens by the author.
