The first phase (2014-2017) focused on investigating students' expectations regarding English writing and identifying common errors among Japanese learners. The second phase (2018-2019) implemented and analyzed a program designed to enhance students' English communicative competence through various methods, including submissions to an international education network. The third phase (2019 onward)involved a collaborative study by the authors analyzing students' essays. Comparative analysis of pre- and post-test writing in terms of word count, organization, grammar, and content across different proficiency levels revealed the absence of clear evaluation criteria for the \"quality of content. \"To develop a valid and reliable measure for the quality of content, the authors conducted a correlation analysis between \"holistic assessments\" by external scorers and our \"analytical assessments,\" incorporating findings into a student rubric. Furthermore, the authors developed an automated system to evaluate the quality of content. A machine-learning system developed until 2022 achieved only an around 60% agreement with teacher assessments. However, the integration of generative AI in 2024 increased this agreement to 83.7%. Finally, this study will introduce the results of a student survey on English writing in the required English course for first-year students during the 2023 academic year, the final year of the junior
