I examined the objective of music education had shifted from “emotional education for female students themselves” to “music education for future housewives and mothers”, as discussed by Tsuchida (2015). The target textbooks included 122 books of 36 different types, with a total of 3046 singing resources. While words related to seasons and nature were frequently used throughout this span of history, the number of words meaning “mother” surged throughout the Showa period. In addition, the word “women”, which was widely used in the Meiji period was no longer used in the Taisho and Showa periods, and words including “girls” and “females” were used instead. Since “mother” was used more often than “female”, it is conceivable that students were expected to become mothers. Furthermore, throughout the Showa period, “lullabies” were frequently used, and lullabies by various composers were produced.
