There has been a gradual increase in the number of foreign students and more growth in these numbers is expected in the future. The purpose of my paper is to determine where foreign students use Japanese in their daily lives as instructional resource data for the teaching of Japanese at JWU. My research was based on interviews which I conducted with foreign students at JWU and native Japanese speakers who interact with them. The data obtained from these interviews indicate that foreign students use Japanese primarily in places such as the dormitory, shops including supermarkets and department stores, public offices such as police stations, the city hall, workplaces, or during university related occasions. As for the foreign students using Japanese with friends, the content of their conversations is not limited to specific places. The usage of Japanese was much more limited in their personal domains compared with what was found in their language usage in educational and public domains. Moreover, the data shows that most of the tasks in which they used Japanese were at the beginner or intermediate levels, while the tasks at the advanced level were very few. In order to improve the effectiveness of Japanese language instruction to foreign students, it is necessary then to introduce tasks which incorporate language content that mirrors communicative situations that take place outside the university and to provide students with detailed explanations of the instructional intent behind these tasks. An investigation of former students and their usage of Japanese in actual, broad, language-use activities needs to be conducted to better understand Japanese language usage by foreign students.}, pages = {95--106}, title = {実践女子大学留学生の言語活動 : 「話す」活動を中心に}, volume = {3}, year = {2008} }
