The paper describes three points as follows: Firstly, it describes the necessity of teaching English rhythm to the learners though their recognition and understanding of the characteristics of the English pronunciation. It also mentions that it is important to compare English with Japanese in a timely manner in order to have them understand English rhythm more profoundly. Secondly, it overviews some of the features of English rhythm in comparison with Japanese. For instance, English rhythm is composed of an alternative appearance of strong and weak stress, whereas Japanese rhythm uses the structure of high and low pitches. In English, a stressed syllable is pronounced more strongly and longer than an unstressed (or weak) syllable. In Japanese, however, each syllable is pronounced almost equally regardless of high or low pitches. Finally, the paper shows a teaching plan of English rhythm. It also mentions that 11 lessons are given to the author's students, and discusses the findings. The author acknowledges that the said teaching plan may not be fully suitable for all teaching situations.
