| 内容記述 | Shimoda Utako (1854-1936), one of the founders of women’s education in modern Japan, proposed the notion of “good wife and wise mother” (ryōsai kenbo) as the female ideal. This figure of “good wife and wise mother” has been commonly seen as forming part of the ideology of the modern Japanese state that sought to incorporate women by defining them through their contributions to the modern state in the form of activities such as housekeeping and child-rearing. However, instead of employing the angle of ideology, this essay will examine Shimoda’s notion of “good wife and wise mother” by seeing it as an expression of her philosophy and ideals. By doing so, the essay will consider the potential and possibilities of her philosophy. Based on the original meaning of the Japanese word tsuma and the Chinese character sai (妻), Shimoda argues that wives have a position equal to their husbands. While she also says that “a wife should submit to her husband,” this statement is not based on a notion of female inferiority, but rather shows a strong concern for the maintenance of domestic stability, in which husbands and wives each have their own ascribed roles and responsibilities. That is, Shimoda’s considerations about “good wives” reflect a perspective that is rooted in the place (ba) of the family and household. |
