内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Jissen Women’s University Library has the following Shimoda’s Handwritten Diaries;
・October 1st, 1888 to December 31st, 1888 (Material of Utako Shimoda No. 30)
・January, 1889 to December, 1889 (Material No. 31)
・January, 1890 to December, 1890 (Material No. 32)
・January, 1891 to December, 1891 (Material No. 33)
There is no detailed survey on these huge amounts of diaries, which Utako Shimoda wrote almost every day. Still these diaries are important materials to discover what she was doing that time, when she was the actual manager of Peer Women’s School.
First, this report shows the bibliography of the above four materials, and briefly takes up main events from October to December in 1888 recorded in Material No. 30. The report also focuses on private events of Shimoda’s family during this time.
The diary in 1888 was written every day except December 31st. As Kazuko Hirao, niece of Shimoda, wrote in her reminiscence, “The diary she wrote without missing a single day in her 80 years’ life”, the diaries in the four books also give a glimpse of Shimoda’s meticulous nature writing everyday records.
The body of the diaries consists of the time of rising, school attendance, leaving school,receiving visitors, making visits, coming home and going to bed and so on in a rough time series, and the names of people that visited her and people that she visited, and the content of the visit are put on record briefly. She proceeded to the Imperial Court and received some visitors every day besides the schoolwork, and Shimoda herself repeatedly made visits and exchanged letters. There is little description of personal or occasional thoughts.
There is little information about Shimoda’s private life in the diaries, but this report focuses on these descriptions because the descriptions tell that she repeated meetings due to family trouble and provide evidence for family affairs conjectured from other materials. The diaries show the Shimoda’s everyday life when she led a busy life bearing heavy responsibility as the actual manager of Peer Women’s School and moreover faced family troubles.
I would like to introduce other affairs that appeared in the diaries one by one.
