| 内容記述 | Virginia Woolf ’s attitude towards women’s higher education as seen in her A Room of One’s Own (1929) and her short story “A Woman’s College from Outside” (1926) is examined in this article. Although her father, Leslie Stephen, was a former fellow of Cambridge University and her brothers were educated there, she did not undergo any formal schooling. The university was a place she sometimes visited as an outsider. In A Room of One’s Own, which is based on two lectures she delivered at Newnham College and Girton College, two women’s colleges at the University of Cambridge, Woolf criticized the traditional educational system created by men because she believed that it bred a craze for acquisition in them and caused wars. She looked upon the esprit de corps, which men so highly valued, with distrust. Therefore, in “A Woman’s College from Outside”, she describes Newnham College at night-time when women students flouted rules and discipline, not during the day when masculine values pervaded the college. Woolf wished the students of Newnham and Girton would ‘rewrite history’ because she found it skewed and unreal due to the scarcity of information about women. She asked them to have the courage to write what they want and publish all kinds of books. She insisted that financial independence was essential for this because women could not ‘think of things in themselves’ if they were dependent on men and felt constrained in their presence. |
