内容記述 | Takeo Shimoda, what kind of person was he? The mortuary tablet of Takeo Shimoda, which had been missing for a long time, has been found. This report investigates Takeo Shimoda, the husband of Utako Shimoda, with reference to the previous studies. Takeo Shimoda was a clansman of Marugame Domain in Shikoku; he was a swordsman. He traveled to various places in Japan for training in swordsmanship and stopped by Iwamura Domain, which is Utako’s hometown. It has been said that In early Meiji era, he coached swordsmanship in Tokyo; he instructed swordsmanship in the police academy where Juzo Hirao, the father of Utako, taught. Takeo soon had close a relationship with Juzo, and this relationship is said to have resulted in his marriage to Utako. Utako resigned as a court lady and married Takeo, but he suffered a serious illness. She had strong requests from people around her, and started a private school for women’s education; she established the school on her premises. At the same time, she nursed her husband, but he died of illness about four years after they married. After that, Utako became remarkably active as a women’s educator. Takeo, however, has been considered as a person who was behind the times, and who was a burden on Utako. This study takes a fresh look at Takeo based on related materials. It also shows images of Takeo’s mortuary tablet, from which we can sense Utako’s strong feelings for her husband. |
