| 内容記述 | 本稿は、約８６年前の英会話表現の文献『實用英會話の秘訣』（１）に掲載されている英語発音について、音変化がどのように記述されているかを主に文強勢の視点から分析したものである。分析結果から、音変化をできるだけ近似的に記述していることが分かった。しかし、この近似的なカナ表記には文強勢の位置が示されていないことを指摘し、８６年前のカナ発音表記に文強勢の位置の提示を試みている。この試みにより、学習者に英語の強弱リズムで英語を読ませることが可能になるとの考えを示している。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | In this paper I discuss how English pronunciations would be transcribed in Katakana letters as practically as possible, even though the sound structure of Japanese is different from that of English. I reveal why the Katakana phonetic notation is useful to Japanese learners of English as a foreign language, and discuss some problems of such notation. I also find how Jitsuyou Eikaiwa no Hiketsu ＊（1927） transcribes English sounds in Katakana letters to approximate the native pronunciations of English. I analyze Katakana phonetic notation in Jitsuyou Eikaiwa no Hiketsu from the viewpoint of sentence stress and then note that Jitsuyou Eikaiwa no Hiketsu tries to transcribe a variety of changes in pronunciation such as weakening of the function words like “and” and “of,” assimilation, and reduction. However, it does not show any primarily stressed syllables at all. Finally, I point out that Japanese learners of English may be able to pronounce English with stresstimed rhythm if the stressed syllables are indicated in the original Katakana phonetic notation. ＊ The Key to Success in Practical English Conversation（literally translated by the author of this paper） |
